Printing a poster towel
After the first ELLIS Doctoral Symposium (EDS) 2021 in Tübingen, EDS is back in 2022, this time in Alicante (Spain), with summery temperatures that are inviting to hang out at the beach 🏖.
"Why not bring my poster in form of a beach towel to avoid carrying around a bulky poster container?", I thought. (And to check the stereotype that as a German in Spain you really need a towel)
I had already seen textile posters at conferences, but felt like—while they were foldable—using them as a towel would provide a quite limited experience. So I looked for a more general fabric printing option. I ended up ordering the print from Contrado.
- I chose the Tender Terry Towelling fabric, simply because it was advertised on the website to be usable as a towel.
- After starting the design process, you need to specify the print dimensions (118.8cm width, 84.1cm length for my A0 landscape poster). I also added the white overlock hem option.
- The total cost, including shipping to Germany, was $77.98. Surprisingly, this was much cheaper than printing a conventional textile poster (at least the offers I was able to find).
- From placing the order, to receiving the print, it took less than a week (ordered on a Thursday, arrived next Wednesday).
So far, I haven't discovered any downsides of the cotton fabric print in comparison to a conventional textile poster, and would definitely go for this solution for future posters.
